A consultation over next steps proposed for Jaywick Sands which was paused due to the period of national mourning has been extended.
Some planned community events inviting people to share their ideas were cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Now, new events have been set-up; while the consultation as a whole has been extended until 5pm on Thursday, 27 October.
The consultation is on a Place Plan being developed by Tendring District Council (TDC) for the area, a framework from which recent positive steps in the community can be built upon.
TDC is also consulting on its draft Design Guide for Jaywick Sands, which sets out minimum design needs for new builds in the area; taking into account up-to-date national standards and Environment Agency guidance.
Results from the consultation will allow the council to fine-tune proposals into a more detailed plan for consideration.
Paul Honeywood, TDC Cabinet Member with Special Responsibility for Jaywick Sands, urged people to share their ideas during the consultation.
“As a mark of respect, and in line with Royal protocol, we paused our consultation events during the period of national mourning; and I am pleased that we are now starting these up again,” Paul said.
“Any comments made online during that time will still form part of the consultation.
“Much good work has already been carried out with the community in Jaywick Sands in recent years, and these are the next steps which are vital to keep that momentum going. But it is crucial that we get the community’s input into those next steps.”
People can take part in the consultation online at www.tendringdc.gov.uk/jaywicksandsconsultations, which also contains details of a consultation webinar.
A series of drop-in events are also taking place at the following dates and times:
- Saturday 24 September, 12-2pm, Inclusion Ventures, Broadway
- Friday, 7 October, 1pm-3pm, Jaywick Sands Martello Tower, Belsize Avenue
- Thursday, 13 October, 9.30am-11.30am, Jaywick Sands Community Resource Centre, Brooklands
- Saturday, 22 October, 10.30am-1pm, Jaywick Sands Community Resource Centre, Brooklands
The Place Plan will consider a range of ideas around development of affordable housing and services; to improve housing quality working in conjunction with landlords; and improvements to streets and open spaces.
The aim is to ensure long-term improvement of Jaywick Sands as a place to live and work, and is dependent on improvements to flood defences – which are currently being assessed by the Environment Agency. The council is committed to working positively with the community to find the best way forward and has ruled out compulsory purchase orders or full-scale demolition – unpopular options that were considered in the past.
